How a session works
Between turns a hard conversation into a short, fair structure. The guide speaks briefly, keeps time, and makes sure you each feel heard before anyone replies.
A session together, step by step
About 30 minutes. Who shares first alternates between sessions. You can pause for a break at any point.
- Check-in2 min
You each say, in a few words, how you’re arriving today. If you agreed a step last time, the guide asks how it went.
- First partner shares7 min
One of you has the floor and describes what happens and how it feels. The other only listens; if they jump in, the guide kindly says their turn is next.
- Second partner reflects3 min
The listener says back what they heard — not whether they agree. The speaker says what was right and what was missing.
- Second partner shares7 min
Now the other partner has the floor, and the first listens.
- First partner reflects3 min
The first partner says back what they heard, until their partner feels understood.
- Common ground4 min
What do you both want? What do you understand about each other now that you didn’t before?
- Agree a step3 min
One small, concrete thing to try this week, with each person’s part.
- Close1 min
The guide names something each of you did well, and says goodbye.
Why this structure
In most arguments both people talk and nobody feels heard. Taking turns, and checking you understood before you reply, is one of the most widely taught couples-communication methods. Real couples rarely do it on their own when emotions run high — so the guide does the remembering for you.
- Dedicated time to speak, with a gentle countdown
- Saying back what you heard, before your own side
- A break whenever it gets too heated — the guide keeps your place
- One small step, so talking turns into something you do
Around each session
Your story first
The first session is about getting to know you: how you met, what’s good, what’s hard, and what you hope for.
Private prep
Either of you can talk on your own first, to find the words for something hard. Only you see it.
Seeing progress
A 30-second weekly check-in each, and a quick “did you feel heard?” after sessions, so you can notice change.
What Between isn’t
It isn’t a therapist, doesn’t diagnose anything, and can’t help in an emergency. If you feel afraid of your partner, please see our safety page instead of talking it through together.
